Running NW6sp2 with nw6nss3c. Have Sys on traditional volume and data volumes on NSS (was migrated from a 5.1 server)

I just got done dealing with an NSS issue where my pools had some corruption. Running a Nss /poolrebuild on them seemed to fix the issue, but since then I've been getting the following TTS errors on the console. Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it? I'm concerned because the number of delayed transactions seems to be climbing each night.

1-20-2004 12:00:32 am: FILESYS-5.13-574 [nmID=E0013]
TTS exceeded the limit of number of active transactions
6 transactions delayed

1-21-2004 12:00:30 am: FILESYS-5.13-574 [nmID=E0013]
TTS exceeded the limit of number of active transactions
14 transactions delayed

1-22-2004 12:00:30 am: FILESYS-5.13-574 [nmID=E0013]
TTS exceeded the limit of number of active transactions
19 transactions delayed

These are information messages referring to the transaction tracking
system.
Some application on your server is probably using the transaction tracking
system and is doing more transactions that what the server configuration
allows.
You might be able to eliminate the message by increasing the number of
transactions:
Monitor.nlm -> Server Paramateres -> Common file system -> Maximum
Transactions

However it might be worthwhile trying to find out what program is
responsible for the message and why it generates so many transactions.

Since it's happening each night at 12:00am I suspect one of two things. The compression start hour is set to 12:00am, so maybe it has something to do with that. Otherwise, it seems to happen only on nights when my backup is scheduled, except that my backup doesn't start until 1:00am, so I'm not sure that is it.

My Maximum transactions was set to 1200 so I increased it to 1500. Do I need to reboot the server for that setting to take affect?

That's very low! I think the default is 10000

I don't know whether the parameter is life or whether you have to reboot
your server.

I changed the setting from 1200 to 5000 and my server didn't like that. It had TTS errors right away after it came up.
1-26-2004 3:06:47 pm: FILESYS-5.13-735 [nmID=E0015]
!!! WARNING !!! TTS being delayed by lack of system resources (reason =
6).
1-26-2004 3:06:54 pm: FILESYS-5.13-693 [nmID=E0017]
!!! WARNING !!! TTS is being throttled back due to lack of system
resources.

So I changed it to 1500 and it seems to be OK now. Any suggestions as to why it needs to be so low and what else I could check into on this issue? This server is running NDPS with 11 printers, also running Arcserve, Netshield, Zfd4.0.1 (no inventory db or imaging), and that's about it.

Well, this means your server is probably seriously lacking memory (or
disk space on SYS). I suggest you verify if your server has enough
memory and possibly add some more.

I guess someone in the past lowered your TTS settings to save memory as
the server might already have had memory problems before.

I have 1 gig of RAM on this server. I also have an identical (hardware) server with the TTS setting at the default of 10000 and do not get these errors. I have 4+ gigs of free space on an 8gig sys volume.

I believe the TTS setting was lowered because of a problem with NDPS in the past. Also, the server was a 5.1 server so that setting may be a carry over that was not changed when it was updated to 6.

Since these TTS errors showed up on startup, could it be Arcserve loading that is causing the errors? I have an Arcserve database that is 800mb. Or maybe a Btrieve issue?

No. The only things I know on a Netware server that actually use TTS is
NDS (I think that stopped with edir though) and NDPS. So in your case,
IMHO only NDPS is left as possible culprit, unless someone has manualy
flagged some other stuff as transactional.

This message means just what it says.

You can adjust the value: MONITOR > Server Parameters > Transaction
Tracking > Maximum transactions.
